AUTOMATION BASICS – IP65
💡 What Does IP65 Actually Mean?
You’ve probably seen specifications such as:
IP65
But what do these two numbers mean?
The first digit relates to protection against solid objects and dust.
The second digit relates to protection against water.
For IP65:
6️⃣ = Dust-tight
5️⃣ = Protected against water jet
So an IP65-rated component offers a higher level of environmental protection than a component with a lower IP rating.
However, here’s an important point:
💡 IP65 does NOT mean the component is waterproof or suitable for immersion.
When selecting an electrical component, consider where it will be installed and what kind of exposure it will experience.
For example:
🏭 Factory floor
💦 Areas exposed to water spray
🌫️ Dusty environments
☀️ Outdoor installations
The correct IP rating depends on the actual application.
